Slice of Life

My day-to-day shenanigans

Y’all.

This entire week has been absolutely bananas for me. My oldest graduated kindergarten, I’ve been preparing goods from my bakery to sell at a weekend market, my sibling (who lives next door) is away on a trip so I’ve been handling their housework and their cat, and between all of that I have managed to finish four chapter of book two of the Eye Of The Storm series, titled Inferno.

Needless to say, I need a nap.

I’ve been so in my head about my book series. I struggle with patience, and the waiting to hear back from an agent has been killing me. I know it’s part of the process and I respect it, I just. Hate waiting. Desperately.

Having the freedom to hide away in my sibling’s house when I need a break has been incredibly helpful. My husband likes to crack jokes whenever I flee next door, but he supports me 100%. I doubt I’d be able to get nearly as much writing done without his help.

If I don’t have anything else going on for the day, I wake up, make breakfast for my kids, eat, and hop onto my computer to read over what I last wrote. I’m a perfectionist, so I almost always edit the last chapter before starting a new one. Even though I know my husband won’t judge me too harshly for a clunky sentence or choppy section, I still want it to be as good as it can be without being formally edited.

My computer is in my bedroom, so unless I lock myself in my family wanders in and out. I’m incredibly snippy about people reading over my shoulder. My husband has been shooed out more than once, and my son finds great satisfaction in reading aloud what I’m writing. Sometimes it’s really cute, but when the content is not, ahem, child friendly, I have to distract him away from me.

I like using Wattpad to write. It separates chapter by chapter which is much easier for me to keep track of. Once a chapter is complete, I copy and paste it into the book’s Word document.

My *writing station*

Music is a must for me to write. I’ve created playlists for my characters to capture their personalities and thought processes. So, more often than not, I’m hunched over my keyboard chugging sparkling water and listening to a character playlist while I type away.

Exchange the cute dress for pajamas and add glasses, and you’ll get an idea of what I look like hunched over the keyboard.

Life is a balancing act. Through trial and error, I have learned what works for me and my family when it comes to my writing schedule. My husband works nights, which allows me to work on my writing during the day unless I have bakery orders. The bakery pays the bills, so that comes first. My daughter is a daddy’s girl to the core, so she opts to cling to her dad; my son, however, is a mama’s boy. Now that he’s out of school, my writing schedule may need tweaking. My daughter will let me write all day so long as I feed her, but my son gets upset if I can’t immediately give him my attention. We’re both learning the importance of patience!

Well, that’s a peek into my day-to-day! ‘Til next time,
